Texas families often hear the HCS and Texas Home Living (TxHmL) interest lists called “waiting lists.” Because services may not be available immediately, joining early is important—even if your child is young or your family is managing well today.
While you wait, keep your address, phone number and primary contact information current with your Local Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority (LIDDA). Respond to every contact about continued interest, keep copies of records and ask the LIDDA about services or programs that may be available now.
This is also a good time to learn about Consumer Directed Services in Texas. If CDS is available through a future program, you may be able to recruit, hire and manage the people providing approved services. Understanding employer responsibilities and comparing FMSAs in Texas before enrollment can make the transition easier.
A place on an interest list is not a guarantee of eligibility, but preparation matters. Stay reachable, stay organized and keep asking what support is available today—not only what may become available later.
